Sri Lanka is famous for many beautiful things inclusive tea but we come here for the tropical climate, a good holiday and gems of course. Specifically moonstone and sapphire are two of the many gems to be found on the island. We were lucky when we discovered a working mine - not one of those set up for tourists. I always picture mining lands to be barren and was pleasantly surprised by the scenic, lush surroundings as we were coming closer. The entrance, building and whole setup of the place did away with any other ideas I had about moonstone mining. A small palm leave hut with simple machinery but see for yourself:
